Summary
  • A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on August 5, 2026, at 12:14 PM local time.
  • The epicenter was at sea near Sarangani Island; sources differ on the depth (EMSC: 10 km, Pacific Center: 62 km).
  • No tsunami warning was issued, and there are no reports of casualties or damage so far.
  • Witnesses describe panic and prolonged ground shaking, but a local rescuer believes the consequences will not be severe.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located at sea, southwest of the small island of Sarangani, in the Mindanao region.

Conflicting Depth Estimates

While the EMSC reports the earthquake at a depth of just 10 kilometers, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center estimates a significantly greater depth of 62 kilometers. The EMSC also stated that the epicenter was about 104 kilometers from General Santos City, while the USGS reports a distance of 32 kilometers from Sarangani Island. The quake struck at 12:14 PM local time.

Despite the earthquake's strength, no tsunami warning was issued. There are currently no official reports of casualties or property damage.

"People Were Running and Screaming in Panic"

A rescuer from Sarangani Island, Harly Sauro, described the dramatic moments to AFP. "The earthquake was quite strong. I saw people in panic. They were running and screaming," he recounted. He added that the tremors occurred at an inconvenient time while local authorities were distributing financial aid, so many people had gathered outdoors. "Everyone is safe," he confirmed.

Sauro expressed optimism regarding the aftermath. "Based on our assessment and experience, we don't believe there will be casualties or damage," he said.

Prolonged Tremors

According to eyewitness accounts collected by the EMSC, the ground shaking was strong and lasted for an extended period. The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity, making earthquakes an almost daily occurrence there.

This earthquake follows a devastating quake that struck the nearby island of Mindanao on June 8, 2026. That earthquake, caused by movement along the Cotabato Trench, toppled buildings, triggered landslides, and killed at least 76 people. At that time, the seabed rose by nearly two meters in some places.
