Summary
  • The FAO's food price index reached its highest level in July since January 2023.
  • Cereals, especially wheat, contributed most to the price rise due to wars and bad weather.
  • The FAO's chief economist warns of a new wave of food inflation due to a 'perfect storm' of wars and El Niño.
  • Meat and dairy prices fell in July, unlike most other food categories.

World food prices rose to their highest level in over three years in July, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A combination of adverse weather conditions and escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine has put pressure on crop markets not seen since early 2023.

The FAO's food price index, which tracks monthly changes in a basket of internationally traded food commodities, recorded an increase in July compared to June, reaching its highest reading since January 2023. Despite the worrying trend, the index remains well below its record high from March 2022, which followed the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Chief Economist Warns of a 'Perfect Storm'

The FAO's chief economist told Reuters that the world is facing a new wave of food inflation. He cited wars in Iran and Ukraine, as well as the El Niño weather phenomenon, as key factors that together create what he described as a "perfect storm" of rising costs and declining crop yields.

The July increase in the index was driven mainly by cereal and wheat prices, with the FAO noting that wheat markets were under pressure from concerns over disruptions to Black Sea exports, as well as crop damage from heatwaves in key producing regions. The escalation of wars in the Middle East and Ukraine is making it harder to ship grains through the Black Sea, further pushing up costs.

Oil and Sugar Prices Rise, Meat Falls

Vegetable oil prices also rose significantly, reaching their highest level since June 2022. Higher crude oil prices due to the conflict in Iran and strong demand for biodiesel supported palm and soybean oil prices, while rapeseed and sunflower oil prices fell.

Sugar prices saw a significant increase, attributed to weather problems in Europe and Asia and expectations of stronger ethanol demand in Brazil. In contrast, meat prices fell from their record high in June. Poultry, pork, and beef prices all declined, although sheep meat prices hit a record high due to limited export supplies from Oceania. Dairy prices also fell.

European Organizations Had Already Warned of Problems

Food organizations in Europe and Denmark had already warned earlier that this year's summer heatwaves and dry spring would affect harvests and impact food prices. The new FAO data now confirms that these issues are being felt globally, further exacerbated by geopolitical instabilities that disrupt key trade routes.

FAQ
Why have world food prices reached a three-year high? +
According to the FAO, the main reasons are adverse weather conditions, the escalation of wars in Iran and Ukraine, and the El Niño phenomenon, which together put pressure on markets and reduce yields.
Which food products saw the biggest price increases in July? +
The largest increases were seen in cereals, especially wheat, as well as vegetable oils and sugar. Wheat prices were affected by problems with Black Sea exports and heatwaves in key regions.
Did all food product prices rise? +
No. While cereals, oils, and sugar became more expensive, meat prices fell compared to June. Dairy prices also declined.
How do wars affect food prices? +
Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East disrupt key trade routes, such as shipping through the Black Sea, leading to disruptions in grain exports and increasing transport costs.
