U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, that the outcome of talks with Iran would be known within 48 hours. He also announced that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz would reopen "very soon," warning Tehran of a "heavy blow" if it does not.
In an interview with Fox News, speaking from California, Trump briefly commented on the progress of diplomatic efforts. "We're having very good talks," the U.S. president said, adding that he believes Iran wants to reach a deal. The conflict, which has lasted more than five months, is not putting pressure on him, according to his remarks. "I have time," the Republican leader said.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also shared the optimism. In a separate interview with CNBC on Tuesday, he stated: "There is a possibility that today or tomorrow we reach an agreement to reopen the strait and move toward normalization."
According to information published by the Axios website, citing "sources in the region," negotiations are underway on a provisional 60-day agreement. This would regulate maritime traffic through the strait that separates Iran and Oman. The preliminary deal, which could be announced as early as Wednesday, August 6, 2026, envisions a clear division of routes: all traffic entering the strait would use the northern route through Iranian waters, while ships exiting would follow the southern route through Omani waters, with no fees charged.
During this transitional period, the middle section of the strait would be cleared of mines. Axios, however, warns that this compromise has not yet been finalized.
Despite diplomatic signals, the security situation on the ground remains tense. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Tuesday that a vessel was struck by an "unknown projectile" in the area, confirming how unstable the situation remains while awaiting the final outcome of the talks.
