Serbian police have arrested an individual with the initials R.T. in Kraljevo, whom Kosovo institutions and human rights organizations link to information that led to the discovery of a possible mass grave. At that location, near Mali Kaluđer, searches were conducted for the remains of 23 Albanian civilians who went missing in 1999. The charge against him is espionage.
The case was extensively covered by the portal P.U.L.S.E in an article published on August 3, 2026. Author Dragan Bursać, in his column, spares no words of criticism for the state. "Imagine a state where a man ends up in custody because he helped families find the bones of their loved ones," writes Bursać. "Imagine a society that responds to such an arrest with almost complete silence. Imagine a country where humanity is treated as treason, and the discovery of a mass grave as a threat to the state."
The chronology of events adds particular weight to the entire case. Information about a possible grave near Mali Kaluđer was first given to investigators back in 2003 and was publicly released in 2013. Only now, when excavations have finally begun to yield the first remains, has the person linked to that information ended up behind bars.
More than 1,300 people are still listed as missing after the war in Kosovo. Every bone found represents a return of a part of dignity for families who have been waiting for nearly three decades. Activist Naim Leo Beširi commented that "a man who discovers a mass grave deserves a state decoration, provided he did not participate in the crime," but in Serbia, as P.U.L.S.E notes, handcuffs followed instead.
The article also highlights the almost complete absence of reaction within Serbia itself. It raises the question of where political parties, the opposition, civic movements, universities, and intellectuals are when the state begins arresting people for uncovering war crimes. Professor Ivan Videnović, as stated, accurately diagnosed the situation by describing Serbia as a "menagerie in which they are no longer able to distinguish brutality from humanity."
Bursać's text also reminds of other cases that illustrate the same pattern: a man beaten nearly to death for laying flowers on the grave of a seven-year-old Albanian girl killed by a bullet to the back of the head, and a lawyer held in custody for months for seeking an investigation into sniper terror over Sarajevo. "These are all parts of the same moral pattern in which empathy for victims becomes a hostile act, and loyalty to state myths is more important than basic humanity," the article concludes.
The P.U.L.S.E portal, founded in 2009, has so far published eight thousand articles by six hundred authors, and the editorial board notes that the views of the authors do not necessarily reflect their editorial policy.
