Goran Doležal, the Mayor of Suhopolje Municipality, has publicly spoken out about a new wave of vandalism, highlighting broken glass on a shelter and damaged streetlights, and appealing to the perpetrators' conscience.
In Suhopolje, incidents of destruction of public property have occurred once again, prompting a strong reaction from the municipality's mayor, Goran Doležal. In a post dated August 7, 2026, accompanied by photos of fresh damage, he posed a question that troubles many residents: why would someone deliberately destroy what belongs to everyone?
This time, vandals targeted public spaces, with notable damage including broken glass on a shelter. "Why does someone feel the need to destroy communal property?" Doležal asked in his post, not hiding his frustration at the senseless destruction.
In a series of rhetorical questions, the mayor tried to understand the perpetrators' motives. "Why does the glass on a shelter bother someone, why do streetlights bother someone, why does someone feel the need to break and tear apart everything that belongs to all of us? It's all ours, and someone paid for it, installed it, and worked hard to make our Suhopolje more beautiful, tidier, and safer," Doležal said.
He also reminded the public of ongoing investments in infrastructure and local landmarks, such as the renovation of Janković Castle and the work on the "Park" Stadium, which received funding last autumn and this spring. These investments, he stressed, are part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life for all residents.
Doležal also shared photos documenting the scale of the problem. Images of damaged public lighting date back to spring, while the photos of the broken shelter are current and testify to a new incident. This indicates a pattern of vandalism that shows no signs of stopping.
"No matter how much we invest and try, it's not enough for individuals who don't appreciate that effort and must destroy everything in their path. Will every tree and every corner of our buildings have to be under video surveillance to be at least somewhat safe?" the mayor wondered, touching on the possibility of increased monitoring as the only remaining solution.
He concluded his post with another appeal for responsibility towards property that belongs to the entire community. "In the end, only one question remains, to which I can't even give myself an answer: why?" Doležal concluded.
