From July 31 to August 2, police recorded alarming figures, including 582 cases of drunk driving and 2,272 speeding violations. In 88 accidents, 128 people were injured, and one person lost their life.
The past weekend on Croatian roads highlighted the full severity of traffic safety issues. During an intensified crackdown from July 31 to August 2, Croatian police recorded a total of 6,181 traffic violations. The numbers reveal a worrying level of deliberate disregard for traffic regulations, with extreme cases of speeding and severe intoxication standing out.
The most drastic example of irresponsibility was recorded in Međimurje County, where a driver was caught speeding at an incredible 237 kilometers per hour. At the same time, in the Split-Dalmatia County area, another driver was found with a blood alcohol concentration of 3.49 promille. At that level of intoxication, operating a vehicle represents a complete loss of control and a direct threat to life.
In total, 582 cases of drunk driving were recorded. The highest number of intoxicated drivers, 193 of them, were caught in Split-Dalmatia County. On the other hand, the Zagreb Police Department led in speeding violations, with 333 such offenses, contributing to the national total of 2,272 speeding violations.
Particularly concerning is the fact that the largest number of drunk driving violations were committed by drivers aged 31 to 40. In this age group, 151 cases were recorded, with the most common blood alcohol concentration ranging between 0.51 and 1 promille. In addition to alcohol and speeding, police also recorded 549 cases of not wearing a seatbelt, and 315 drivers were caught using their mobile phones improperly while driving.
Over the weekend, ten repeat offenders of the most serious traffic violations were also stopped. Due to the danger they pose, seven were detained in special facilities, and urgent proceedings were initiated against eight, with a proposal for the maximum possible penalties. Such measures indicate that these are drivers who, despite previous sanctions, continue to grossly violate the law.
The consequences of irresponsible behavior are tragic. During the same period, 88 traffic accidents occurred in which people were injured or killed. One person lost their life, 23 sustained serious injuries, and the total number of casualties reached 128. These figures clearly refute the notion that traffic accidents happen by chance; rather, they are a direct result of conscious and dangerous decisions made by individuals behind the wheel.
