Residents of Župa dubrovačka have been breathing air polluted by smoke from a fire in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina for days. The blaze in the Trebinje area continues to rage, and smoke is drifting directly over the Malaštica pass and settling over Župa settlements, causing discomfort among the local population.
According to Dubrovački dnevnik, the situation on August 5, 2026, was noticeably more intense than in the past few days. The thick smoke prompted local authorities to react, and the Municipality's mayor, Marko Miloslavić, addressed concerned residents via social media.
We are monitoring the situation, and members of the Župa dubrovačka Volunteer Fire Department are regularly patrolling key positions in our area and tracking the fire's movement. They are ready to respond if and when needed.
Miloslavić emphasized that local services have no authority to influence firefighting efforts outside national borders, but that all precautionary measures on domestic soil have been taken.
The Župa dubrovačka Volunteer Fire Department is continuously patrolling the terrain and monitoring the fire's progress to ensure a timely response if the blaze spreads into Croatian territory. However, the mayor was honest in his assessment that there is no quick fix for the smoke problem.
We are aware that the presence of smoke has worsened air quality and is causing discomfort for our fellow residents. Unfortunately, there is no simple or immediate solution to remove the smoke.
The Municipality says residents will be promptly informed of any significant changes and any measures that services might take, appealing for patience while the fire situation in the neighboring country is brought under control.
