The actor told RTL.hr how he landed an unexpected role, how much his wife Alma's support means to him, and why he misses the 'Wild Bees' crew.
In a major interview for RTL.hr, actor Amar Bukvić spoke about his latest international project, the Scandinavian war drama 'The Value of Life', which, after its regional premiere at the Sarajevo Film Festival, has also arrived on the Voyo platform. He revealed details about the role he got without an audition, the challenges of portraying a morally questionable character, and the immense support he receives from his wife Alma.
How did the engagement for this series come about? Bukvić explained that his agent from Belgrade suggested him for the project. After several rounds of shortlisting, he was offered a role for which he hadn't initially even been considered. "For an actor, it's always particularly interesting when it turns out they've seen you in a completely different light than the one you were originally considered for," he explained.
In the series 'The Value of Life', Bukvić plays Tomislav, a man who, amid the turmoil of war, found himself on the wrong side of history. "I play Tomislav, a man who, in the whirlwind of war, primarily in a human sense, found himself on the wrong side of history," the actor told RTL.hr. He admitted that as an actor, he always strives to understand and justify his character's actions, seeking an answer to what drove him to cross the line of humanity and disregard moral principles.
That inner struggle was an incredibly interesting starting point for him in building the character. Filming took place in Slovakia and Lithuania, and he described the atmosphere on set as excellent, despite the demanding subject matter. He particularly highlighted the brilliant tandem of director Ahmed Abdullahi and cinematographer Johan Hanu, who did excellent preparation, resulting in one of his better experiences on set.
Speaking about his private life, Bukvić particularly emphasized the importance of his wife Alma's support. "I think that without the support of family, no job can be done properly, especially not ours, which often involves being away and unpredictable schedules," he stated. He added that Alma's support means the world to him and that she is the one person from whom he always gets the most honest opinion, without sugarcoating.
He also reflected on the current summer break from filming the series 'Wild Bees', where he plays the complex character Toma Domazet. "I really miss the crew because after almost a year of filming, we've become a small family," he admitted. Stepping into the role of Toma Domazet wasn't easy, as he said, but precisely because of that complexity, it was one of the most interesting characters he's built in front of the camera.
As he says, audiences most remember him for his roles as Milivoj from 'Biba's World' and Vilko from 'The Pride of Ratkajevi', and he hopes that Toma Domazet will soon join them. He takes the comments from passersby on the street with a smile. "There are always comments, but they're mostly well-meaning and endearing. For us actors, it's actually a pleasure because it's confirmation that people are watching the series and following our work," he said.
This year, he finally managed to take a long-planned trip with his colleagues from the Academy, Filip Juričić and Ivan Glowatzky. "We've been good friends since the Academy, and the last time we traveled together was almost twenty years ago," he revealed. As big fans of the film 'The Godfather', they went to Sicily and visited almost all the locations where the film was shot.
When it comes to summer, the Bukvić family traditionally chooses Croatian destinations. "When it comes to summer, we always go to Brač and Makarska," he said. For a perfect day, all he needs is a bit of shade, the sea, good fish, sleep, and reading, with the most important condition-that all his loved ones are well and together.
