The Karlovac Municipal Court extended precautionary measures for a young man charged with intrusive behavior, concluding that the risk of reoffending still exists.
The Karlovac Municipal Court has extended protective measures for a young man from the outskirts of the city, who is charged with harassing his former partner, he is prohibited from approaching within 100 meters of her or making contact via phone, mobile, or social media. The decision was made at a session of the indictment chamber in early July 2026, although the precautionary measures were initially imposed back in March. The prosecution insisted on their continuation, assessing that the risk of reoffending had not disappeared.
After the breakup, the ex-girlfriend described to the police and relevant authorities a series of situations that made her feel threatened, being followed, receiving unwanted messages, and his regular appearances at locations where she happened to be. The court decision also noted an incident at a training ground in Karlovac: he drove his car behind her, then suddenly stopped in front of her vehicle. At a café, according to her account, he insulted and threatened her, and her testimony was largely supported by family and friends.
During the proceedings, the victim confirmed that the defendant is currently complying with the imposed measures, but she requested that they remain in force because she still feels discomfort and fear, she sees him almost every day, and he frequents the same places as she does. The defendant, on the other hand, completely denies all charges against him. His lawyer sought the lifting of the measures, emphasizing that his client has no criminal record, that there are no other proceedings against him, and that he has not contacted his ex-girlfriend for months.
The court nevertheless concluded that the circumstances still point to a risk of reoffending, especially considering his behavior after the breakup. In the court's assessment, he does not accept the end of the relationship and completely denies guilt. Detention was not deemed necessary, the goal, the court concluded, can be achieved with milder measures, namely the continuation of the ban on approaching and any contact with the victim. Every two months, the court will re-examine whether the conditions for these measures are still met, and they can last until the verdict becomes final or enforceable.
