Italian defender shines in Community Shield against Manchester City, with Arsenal's manager full of praise.
Riccardo Calafiori, the 24-year-old Arsenal and Italy defender, became the first Italian to score in the Community Shield. In the match played on August 17, 2026, at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Calafiori found the net against Manchester City just 23 seconds into the game, setting the stage for a convincing Arsenal victory.
"It's hard to imagine a better start. I'm happy for myself and the team; it was an important test of our mentality, and I think we did brilliantly," Calafiori told Gazzetta dello Sport. His early goal was just the beginning of a dominant performance: until the 28th minute, when Kai Havertz doubled the lead, Calafiori's offensive runs were the main threat to the opposition's goal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta did not hide his delight at his defender's display. "Ricky can be a complete player. If he stays fit, with that level of form, he's definitely a top player," Arteta told Gazzetta dello Sport. He particularly highlighted Calafiori's ability to be dangerous in attack while not neglecting his defensive duties.
"When Ricky gets around the opponent's box, he has those instincts. His timing in creating goals is clear to everyone. But at the same time, we ask him to defend as well, and we do that because he knows perfectly how to do both at the highest level," Arteta added. In defense, Calafiori almost completely neutralized Antoine Semenyo, the Manchester City player.
Calafiori admits he wasn't always this complete a player. "I wasn't always like this. I've worked a lot here at Arsenal, and every season I try to improve," he said. His playing style, which he describes as constantly offering teammates options with his movement, also brings him goal-scoring opportunities. "I love playing this way; I think one of my qualities is always giving teammates options with my movement. Then, when I receive the ball, sometimes it happens that I'm so close to goal and I score," he explained.
Particularly impressive was the composure with which he beat the Manchester City goalkeeper after a brilliant pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly, which took out Khusanov and the rest of City's defense. That scene encapsulates Calafiori's role as an "agent of chaos" in a team that lacks a traditional striker with 20 goals a season, making contributions from all players crucial.
Calafiori played a key role in the 2025-26 season, and the Community Shield goal should be just the start for him and Arsenal in the new season. Arteta, however, sees room for improvement. "Ricky can still improve. He needs to be more consistent in everything he does: habits, form, always being available. And in making the right decisions in key moments of the match: that's what we need to focus on, because he's more than capable of being decisive," the Arsenal manager said.
Calafiori will have the chance to make another leap forward on Friday, when Arsenal host Coventry in the Premier League. In his career so far in the English top flight, he has scored three goals in 45 matches, and his ambitions are clear. "We need to do better than last year," Calafiori concluded, referring both to himself and the team.
