The Dalmatian hinterland hides a breathtaking natural phenomenon. This is the Red Lake near Imotski, whose dimensions are so vast that they are hard to grasp until one stands at its very edge. Scientific research conducted during cave-diving expeditions has revealed a vertical drop of nearly 527 meters. Depending on the water level, the height of the water column varies from approximately 232 to 315 meters, with the deepest recorded measurement going several meters below sea level.
Although at first glance one might think the lake got its name from the color of its water, the truth is different. Its striking name is due to the surrounding cliffs, whose reddish and brown hues, especially under sunlight, create a dramatic contrast with the blue surface. This natural phenomenon was formed when a massive karst cave collapsed.
Numerous legends are also associated with the lake. One of the most famous local stories tells of a wealthy but ruthless family that was allegedly punished for its arrogance. Their estate collapsed into the ground, leaving a huge chasm filled with water. According to another legend, it is nearly impossible to throw a stone from the lake's edge into the water-instead of the usual splash, the stone would fall among the rocks or be cast aside by strong air currents.
The Red Lake has not only attracted the curious and lovers of legends. Extreme athletes have also seen it as a challenge, trying their hand at bungee jumping from the high cliffs above the water. Due to its immense depth, terrain configuration, and difficult accessibility, scientific exploration of the lake remains a serious challenge, even decades after it was protected as a geomorphological natural monument in 1964.
Additional recognition for the entire area came in 2024, when UNESCO designated the Biokovo and Imotski Lakes area as a global geopark. The Red and Blue Lakes are among the most famous natural attractions of the region. The Blue Lake, less than two kilometers away, has a completely different character-you can reach the water via a maintained path, and in summer it attracts many swimmers. When it completely dries up, a traditional football match is held on its bottom.
The Red Lake, however, is harder to reach and more mysterious, making it a true symbol of the Imotski region. As highlighted in a video by authors Josip Soče-Pixsell and Ivo Čagalj, in which wine is retrieved from an incredible depth of 70 meters, this place is not just a natural landmark but also one of the most striking symbols of the region.
