A powerful explosion alarmed residents, and police determined that a banned pyrotechnic device was activated by a child near Montovjerna Elementary School. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Residents of Dubrovnik were alarmed on Tuesday evening, shortly after 9 PM, by a loud explosion that echoed through the city. Police responded quickly and established that the detonation was caused by a powerful pyrotechnic product, known as a firecracker, which is banned for use throughout the year.
According to the report from the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, the firecracker was set off by a child who was with a group of other children near Montovjerna Elementary School. The police emphasize that, fortunately, none of the children were injured.
Initial reports of the explosion came from residents of Čokolino, followed by Gruž, which further alarmed citizens. Police officers immediately went to the scene and soon discovered that a minor, in the company of peers, had activated the dangerous pyrotechnic device.
Since children are involved in the incident, the police will summon them to official premises accompanied by their parents to conduct informational interviews.
"According to the information gathered so far, the firecracker was activated by a child who was previously in the company of a larger group of children near Montovjerna Elementary School. Fortunately, none of those children were injured. Since children are involved in this incident, they will be summoned to the police premises accompanied by their parents, where informational interviews will be conducted," said the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department.
After the investigation at the scene near the school, the police located the participants, who will have to come to the police premises with their parents for an interview.
The use of firecrackers carries a fine of 660 to 1,990 euros. The police appeal to the public that pyrotechnics are not toys and that their use can cause very serious injuries or material damage.
"Once again, we want to warn citizens that pyrotechnic devices are not toys and their use can lead to serious injury or material damage," the police stated.
