Udinese and Nigeria national team goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has become a hit on social media due to his physical appearance, but he emphasizes that football is his absolute priority and that his private life does not affect his job.
Maduka Okoye, the 26-year-old goalkeeper for Italian club Udinese and the Nigerian national team, did not attract attention only with his saves during the last World Cup. His striking physical appearance quickly turned him into a social media star and a favorite of audiences who do not usually follow football.
However, in an interview with The Guardian, Okoye made it clear that this status does not go to his head and that his primary focus is always on the pitch. "What happens off the pitch is one thing, and what happens on it is another. You simply have to separate the two. I never allow those two worlds to collide," he said.
Okoye was recently spotted at a Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show during Paris Fashion Week, where his photos once again flooded the internet. Although he is aware that marketing and personal branding are now an integral part of professional sports, he insists on a clear boundary between his private and professional life.
"Attending Paris Fashion Week was a truly impressive experience. It was my first contact with high fashion, and it was fascinating. It's real art. I really enjoyed it and became an even bigger fashion enthusiast than before," Okoye told The Guardian.
The Nigerian international emphasizes that he sees fashion exclusively as a form of artistic expression, not as a tool for self-promotion. "Although marketing and personal promotion are part of business life today, at the end of the day, I am first and foremost a goalkeeper, and my main job is to be on the pitch. Football is my priority. What I do off the pitch has no impact on my job, and these two spheres of my life will not overlap," he said.
Although he grew up in a big city and describes himself as a "city boy," Okoye has learned to appreciate a slower pace of life over time. He has found his home in Udine, the city where he plays for the local club.
"I grew up in a big city, and I will always be a city boy used to the rhythm of a metropolis. However, as the years go by, you learn to appreciate a quieter life. I really like Udine. It's a beautiful, peaceful city where you can fully concentrate on your work. I'm honestly happy to live here," he said.
Although he was in the spotlight himself, Okoye also used the World Cup for his own development. He closely followed other goalkeepers, and Spanish shot-stopper Unai Simón particularly impressed him.
"He was truly impressive, especially in the knockout stages. Not only because of the number of saves, but also because of the way he participated in the game and reacted to through balls against France. For me, he is a top-level goalkeeper," Okoye said.
He added that he was impressed not only by spectacular saves but also by all the other details in the Spanish international's game. "We had a great World Cup, and for us younger goalkeepers, it was an incredible learning opportunity," the Nigerian concluded.
In addition to fashion runways, Okoye was recently seen at a Formula 1 race at Silverstone. There, he had the opportunity to meet young driver Kimi Antonelli. He says the experience completely thrilled him.
"It was fantastic. The whole Formula 1 experience was incredible. I think an athlete can always learn a lot from other sports. It was great to meet the drivers, especially Kimi," Okoye said.
What particularly impressed him was the amount of work and effort that is not visible on television screens. "When you watch everything on TV, it looks one way, but behind the scenes, you realize how much work and effort is required. It was incredible to see what it takes to compete at that level," the Udinese goalkeeper concluded.
