The Municipal State Attorney's Office in Karlovac has filed an indictment against a 22-year-old from the Karlovac area, charging him with months of brutal abuse of his common-law partner. According to the prosecution, the man subjected the woman he lived with to near-daily psychological and physical violence from November 2024 to March 30, 2026, first in a family home and later in an apartment in Karlovac.
The indictment details a pattern of abuse that included name-calling, belittling, and humiliation. The defendant told his partner she was sick and needed treatment. In addition to psychological abuse, he physically attacked her on multiple occasions. The indictment states that he pushed her, punched and kicked her, pulled her hair, and struck her in the head, hands, and legs. This behavior, as stated by the State Attorney's Office, caused the victim fear, humiliation, and a violation of her dignity.
The culmination of the violence occurred in late March this year, when the defendant struck his partner multiple times in the knees and squeezed her forearm. In this attack, the woman sustained bruises to both knees and her left forearm. A medical expert's report determined these to be minor bodily injuries.
During questioning, the 22-year-old rejected most of the charges. He admitted only that they would argue and that he sometimes held her by the arms, claiming he did so to calm her down. He categorically denied systematic physical violence.
The Municipal State Attorney's Office in Karlovac has proposed that the court sentence the defendant to a unified prison term of one year and two months for the criminal offenses of domestic violence and bodily injury. Due to the risk of reoffending, the prosecution also requested an extension of previously imposed precautionary measures.
