Summary
  • Despite drought and record consumption, water supply in Istria County is stable, and no reductions are planned.
  • Occasional network issues are due to aging pipelines, not water scarcity.
  • Istrian Water continuously monitors the situation and prepares investments for renovating the older part of the system.
  • Citizens are urged to consume water responsibly and avoid unnecessary irrigation and yard washing.

Despite extreme weather conditions, prolonged drought, and record consumption, there is enough water in Istria, and implementing reductions is currently not on the agenda. This was the key message from the extraordinary assembly of Istarski vodovod i odvodnja d.o.o. Buzet, held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, where founders were presented with the latest information on the water supply situation in Istria County.

The utility company based in Buzet assures the public that, despite the very high temperatures affecting Istria and the rest of the country, the needs of the population, economy, and tourism sector are fully met.

Bottlenecks, Not Empty Wells

The difficulties that have emerged in recent days in certain parts of the water supply network are not due to a lack of water, but rather the limited capacity of certain pipelines relative to the current exceptionally high consumption. An additional challenge, especially in inland Istria, is posed by failures and ruptures in older pipelines, which are a direct consequence of the prolonged dry period, soil subsidence, and unauthorized water use.

From Istarski vodovod i odvodnja, they emphasize that they continuously monitor the condition of water sources, production, and consumption, and are undertaking all necessary activities to ensure a stable and secure supply, including the preparation of new investment projects aimed at renovating the older part of the system.

Appeal in the Shadow of Records

The company has also issued an appeal to all consumers to use water responsibly, especially during peak consumption periods, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary irrigation of green areas and washing of yards. "By responsible water consumption, we can all contribute to the stability of the water supply system during the peak of the summer season," the utility company from Buzet states.

In conclusion, Istarski vodovod i odvodnja emphasizes that there is currently no reason for concern; the water supply across the entire Istria County is stable, there is enough water, and reductions are not planned.
