Couples planning weddings today face numerous challenges, with wedding costs often being a major concern. In search of an answer to whether it has always been this way, Reddit users came across a photo of an old menu from 1969 that opened a window into the past and showed how festive dinners were once prepared in Yugoslavia.
The menu was preserved from a festive dinner held on October 18, 1969, in Crikvenica, at the hotel "Pavilions Riviera," or the "Villa Danica" pension. The photo was posted on Reddit by user u/Anketkraft and was shared by Dnevno.hr. The 57-year-old menu reveals that wedding dinners back then were served in multiple courses, as reported by author M.P.
The dinner began with cold cuts, followed by beef broth with homemade noodles, and then a beef steak in red wine. The table featured buttered rice, potatoes, mixed vegetable salad, various homemade cakes, and seasonal fruit.
Throughout the rest of the dinner, guests could enjoy roasted veal and pork, chicken with fried baby potatoes, and pea stew prepared in the Viennese style. The menu also included green salad, and at the end, wedding cake and black coffee were served. One particularly interesting element is at the bottom of the list, where sauerkraut-stuffed cabbage rolls are mentioned. Nowadays, at wedding celebrations in the early morning hours, goulash is most commonly offered.
As for drinks, guests could choose from white wine from Hvar, various aperitifs, Cockta, orangeade, mineral water, and soda water. Comments on Reddit reveal divided opinions. "The food sounds divine," "They really knew how to eat back then," and "When I compare it to today's wedding food, it makes me want to cry," are some of the comments from social media users.
However, some point out that the menu doesn't look much different from what is served at weddings today. "It's identical even today," some users say.
