The City of Kaštela has launched a public procurement procedure for the complete renovation of the coastal strip. The project, worth €11.25 million including VAT, is expected to solve flooding issues and ease traffic congestion in the old town core.
The City of Kaštela has formally initiated the public tender process for selecting a contractor for the complete renovation of the waterfront between Kaštel Stari and Kaštel Novi, specifically from the port in Kaštel Stari to the Cippico Tower. The total estimated project value is €9 million excluding VAT, which amounts to approximately €11.25 million including tax, with a significant portion of funds intended to be secured from EU funds. The tender for contractor selection is open until September 11, 2026.
The project documentation and architectural design for the coastal area of Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Novi are being handled by the design office ARP d.o.o. Leading the team is architect Dinko Peračić, dipl. ing. arh., along with his associates. The detailed design is based on the earlier Main Design by the same company, which secured the building permit, with the chief designer for the entire waterfront project being mr. sc. Željan Pernat, dipl. ing. građ. from the company Obala d.o.o.
The project covers an area of approximately 13,315 square meters along a 350-meter stretch. The primary technical goal is to provide long-term protection for the old town core from flooding caused by strong southerly and southwesterly winds.
To achieve this, the new shoreline will be extended up to 20 meters into the sea compared to the current one, and the entire promenade will be raised to a uniform height of 1.3 meters above sea level. In areas with the strongest waves, steps will be carved into the coast, allowing pedestrians access to the sea while simultaneously reducing wave impact.
The project not only protects against marine influences but also addresses the long-standing traffic issue. An area of approximately 2,570 square meters will see the renovation of roads for vehicles and pedestrians, clearly separating automobile traffic from pedestrian zones. Pedestrians will have complete safety, while emergency vehicles, utility vehicles, and delivery vehicles will have controlled and unobstructed access.
The pedestrian zone will encompass around 8,000 square meters of concrete and paved surfaces highly resistant to marine conditions. The entire stretch is conceived as 10 landscaped "islands" that will feature café terraces, children's playgrounds, rest areas with benches, and public drinking fountains. The cross streets of the historic core naturally continue between these islands, creating a direct connection between the town and the sea.
Significant attention is given to green spaces, which will cover approximately 1,730 square meters. The intention is to create a true Mediterranean oasis and provide pleasant shaded areas for relaxation.
The anticipated duration for the construction works themselves is 24 months, while the total contract period until final handover is planned at 28 months.
