Recently, the Municipal Court in Čakovec issued a non-final verdict against a woman born in 1999, who was charged with stealing a wallet during a trip towards Držimurec. The sentence imposed by the court is seven months in prison, which includes time spent in pre-trial detention starting from May 18, 2026.
Exploited the Driver's Inattention
According to the verdict, on May 18, 2026, between 1:20 PM and 2:20 PM, she was in a passenger car driven by a man who was taking her from Čakovec to Držimurec. While the man was driving, she took advantage of his inattention and took a black men's leather wallet from the central compartment. Inside the wallet were 278.30 euros in various denominations, as well as the owner's personal documents. In court, the defendant admitted to committing the criminal offense.
Wallet Ended Up in Her Bra, Then on a Fence
In her defense, she explained that she took the wallet because the man had been unpleasant and rude to her during the drive. Her explanation was that she did it out of revenge. After the man dropped her off at a store in Držimurec, as she said, she placed the wallet on a fence, from which it fell onto the neighboring property.
However, surveillance camera footage provided the court with a very clear picture of what happened. The footage shows the woman taking a black object resembling a wallet from her bag and placing it under her shirt, in the bra area. She then allows the man to search her bag, and after he leaves, she again removes the wallet-like object from her bra area. Subsequently, in the yard of a family house, on the ground, the police found the wallet containing personal documents and one 20-euro banknote.
Previously Convicted for Theft
This was not her first encounter with the law regarding property crimes. In a first verdict from 2021, for theft she received six months in prison, suspended for two years, and in 2022, for theft and aggravated theft, she was sentenced to 11 months in prison, which was replaced by community service. The court considered her prior convictions for the same offenses as an aggravating circumstance.
Mitigating circumstances were taken into account: she confessed to the crime, showed remorse, promised not to commit further offenses, and is also the mother of three minor children. In the court's opinion, the sentence is appropriate because the offense is serious, given her personality and the fact that the theft was intentional.
Money Hidden in a Sneaker and a Phone Case
She must compensate the victim with 258.30 euros. A total of 565 euros was found on the woman, of which 510 euros were hidden in a sneaker under the insole, and the rest in a phone case, which is interesting. The court decided to return 306.70 euros to her, and she must compensate the victim with 258.30 euros. The defendant has the right to appeal the verdict.
