The People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China has publicly demonstrated its operational airborne nuclear strike capability for the first time. In a video clip released on August 4, 2026, a strategic H-6N bomber is shown carrying a JL-1 air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) under its fuselage, symbolically closing the last missing leg of China's nuclear triad.
The video was jointly released by the Political Department of the Central Military Commission, China's internet regulatory agency (Cyberspace Administration of China), and the state media outlet China Media Group. The footage depicts a simulated combat scenario in which a joint command executes a coordinated strike against an enemy fleet.
The footage shows the H-6N bomber flying in formation with two fifth-generation J-20 fighters. The JL-1 missile, approximately 11 meters long, is housed in a semi-recessed launcher under the bomber's fuselage. Technically, it is a two-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile derived from the ground-based DF-21 medium-range system.
The estimated operational strike range of the JL-1 is between 3,000 and 8,000 kilometers, depending on the bomber's speed and altitude at launch. The missile uses advanced inertial and satellite navigation systems and can carry either maneuvering reentry vehicles (MaRVs) or hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) with nuclear or conventional warheads.
In addition to the JL-1, the video production showcased other advanced weapon systems of the Chinese military. These include the road-mobile anti-ship ballistic missile system DF-21D, the ship-launched hypersonic anti-ship missile YJ-20, and the air-launched supersonic anti-ship missile YJ-12.
Although the missile system was first declassified during a parade in Beijing, alongside strategic nuclear platforms such as the DF-31 and DF-5 intercontinental ballistic missile series, this is the first time the public has seen the system in an actual flight environment. The PLA has not yet released additional operational details, including which specific exercise this was or the exact flight time.
Historically, the absence of a viable airborne nuclear system represented a significant gap in China's nuclear deterrence. With this demonstration, that gap is now closed, marking an important development in global security dynamics and potentially altering the strategic balance of power.
