Summary
  • A collision in the Sveti Marko tunnel on the A1 caused a 13-kilometer queue.
  • At the Kaštel and Plovanija border crossings, there is a two-kilometer queue.
  • Increased traffic is also recorded on the A3, Krk Bridge, and approaches to tourist destinations.
  • HAK warns of wet and slippery road surfaces.

On the A1 motorway Zagreb-Ploče-Karamatići, a queue about 13 kilometers long formed after a traffic accident in the Sveti Marko tunnel in the direction of Zagreb, the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reported on Monday, August 17, 2026. Currently, only one lane is in use in that area, and the speed limit is 60 kilometers per hour.

Breakdowns and Congestion on A1 and A3

Additional slowdowns on the same motorway are caused by a broken-down vehicle at the lay-by in the Mala Kapela tunnel in the direction of Dubrovnik, where traffic is moving in two lanes with the same 60 km/h limit. Higher traffic density is recorded between Zagreb and the Zadar 1 junction in both directions.

On the Zagreb bypass, which is part of the A3 motorway Bregana-Lipovac, traffic is denser between the Zagreb zapad exit and the Lučko exit toward Lipovac, and between the Zagreb istok exit and the Zagreb zapad exit in the direction of Bregana.

Queues Toward Slovenia, Istria, and on Krk Bridge

At the exit ramp of the Učka junction on the A7 motorway toward Opatija and Istria, the queue is two kilometers long. On the Istrian Y (A8/A9), due to increased traffic toward Slovenia, there is also a two-kilometer queue at the Kaštel and Plovanija border crossings, while at the Matulji junction in the direction of Rijeka, the queue is one kilometer long.

On the bridge to Krk, traffic is increased in both directions, and toward the mainland, vehicles are already backing up from Njivice. Queues are also forming along the Adriatic coast on the approach to tourist destinations, especially in Istria and on the island of Krk.

Roadworks and Border Delays

On the state road DC1, traffic is moving slowly in the roadworks zone between Gračac and Knin near Otrić. Due to higher traffic density, there are also delays at ferry ports and docks, and at some border crossings, waits are several hours long.

HAK advises drivers to be cautious as roads are wet and slippery in places, and to adjust their speed and driving style to current conditions, paying attention to the distance between vehicles.
