The Belgian striker, now at Fenerbahce, accused the Italian media of boycotting him and questioning his fitness during last season at Napoli.
Romelu Lukaku, the former Inter, Roma, and Napoli striker who moved to Fenerbahce this summer, has spoken openly about his difficult last season. In an interview with Belgian television, reported by Sportmediaset, Lukaku stated that the past year was the worst of his life.
The Belgian striker, born in 1993, did not mince words when discussing the reasons for leaving Napoli. "It was the worst year of my life," said Lukaku, alluding to a series of problems he faced, including the loss of his father Roger, physical issues, and strained relations with the club.
Lukaku hinted that behind his departure were things happening behind the scenes. "Why did I decide to leave? I heard things and decisions were made... That's all. If that's how it turned out, then it was better for me to go," he explained.
He was particularly harsh about claims that he was not fit to play. "The claim that I'm not fit is simply false. They probably said that in Italy to boycott me. I am 100% ready to play," Lukaku stated.
Despite the tough season, Lukaku does not plan to end his career anytime soon. He revealed that he wants to play until 2030, including appearances for the national team. "Soon I'll be ready, I've always said I want to continue until 2030, including the national team. After that, it'll be game over: there are many players who manage to play football until they're 40," he said.
He emphasized the importance of a mental attitude in a professional career. "It's a question of mentality: if you always listen to others' opinions, you become unhappy, but I take care of myself. Now I'm back," added the Belgian striker.
Lukaku signed a contract with Fenerbahce for one season with an option to extend for another. "I signed for one season with an option for another, and I hope to honor those two years, after which I'll return home," he concluded.
