Matija Subotić, the 18-year-old midfielder for Lokomotiva, is the new youngest captain in the Croatian First League. After wearing the armband in last weekend's 3:2 victory over Istra 1961, he will retain the role for the rest of the season, as confirmed in an interview with Sportske novosti. The first home match at Maksimir against Gorica will be another test for the young man from Gajnice, who successfully passed his high school final exams and driving test a month ago-the latter on his second attempt.
Subotić admits that coach Nikica Jelavić broke the news of his permanent captaincy during a preseason match. "It's an incredible feeling, but it's much easier with experienced teammates like Posavac, Vešović, Pajač... You can learn so much from them," Subotić told Sportske novosti. He adds that not much has changed, except that he now gives a short speech in the dressing room, noting that the role isn't entirely unfamiliar since he was also captain in the youth setup.
On the upcoming clash with Gorica, he says: "They're a good team; last season they beat Dinamo and Hajduk, but if we're at our best and apply what we've practiced, I believe we can take all three points."
Last season, Subotić made 32 appearances in the Croatian First League, 21 of them as a starter. In April, he first ran out with the captain's armband against Slaven Belupo, becoming the second-youngest captain in all senior UEFA competitions that season. His composure on the ball and ability to play out under pressure have become his trademark.
"I love it most when I have the ball and the opponent presses us high, man-to-man. Yes, I'm often praised for my calmness," reveals the young Croatian U-19 international. After a poor match, he admits, he struggles to sleep the first night because he analyzes everything and waits for the next chance to prove himself. He tries to avoid external commentary: "After matches, I try to read as few comments as possible; I stay away from all that to keep my head clear. Even my parents don't tell me much about what's written. I feel better when my mind is clear."
Comparisons with Mateo Kovačić, who wore Dinamo's captain's armband as a 17-year-old in 2011, serve as extra motivation for Subotić. "That can only be a huge motivation! It would be amazing to reach that level; that's the pinnacle, there's nothing beyond it, and of course I want to achieve that," he said. He cites Luka Modrić, Rodri, and Vitinha as his main role models.
Former coach Silvijo Čabraja had a huge influence on his development, pulling him into senior training at 16 and giving him his debut in January 2025. "Matija has an exceptionally level head, potential, footballing skill... He's a free player, finds space, knows how to move between the lines and forward, and brings the ball out. Above all, Subotić is a midfielder who plays with his head and sees the game! He reads the play, both his own team's and the opponent's, has good perception and a sense of space. He's physically strong and uses that quality to the fullest," Čabraja analyzes for Sportske novosti, adding that "opponents practically can't do anything to him."
Subotić recalls his debut with special emotion. "I remember coming on in the 80th minute, and my legs were shaking," says the player who has been developing at Lokomotiva since 2017, after arriving from Ponikve. Among his favorite memories, he highlights three consecutive youth wins against Hajduk and last season's senior victory over Dinamo, though he admits to feeling nervous in front of the Bad Blue Boys' atmosphere.
Despite his rapid rise to senior football, Subotić managed to pass his high school finals and driving test-the latter on his second attempt. Describing his daily routine, he says he used to often "bum" rides to training from teammates Domagoj Antolić and Šitum. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out in his neighborhood with friends and spending summer days at Bundek with more experienced teammates like Kolinger, Vešović, Trajkovski, and Rog. Amid all his commitments, he also plans further self-improvement-he'll enroll in an English course.
His goals are clear. "I'd love for us to fight for Europe. Of course, I'm also aiming for goals and assists, but primarily for the whole team to perform at a high level. My dream is to one day play in one of the top five leagues and in the Champions League. There's nothing beyond that!" Subotić concluded.
