Marin Miletić, an MP from Most, on Saturday urged Interior Minister Davor Božinović to act urgently after receiving a tip-off about illegal waste dumping in Lika, on state land in the Udbina area. According to his own statements, he provided the ministry with the exact location and photographs received from citizens, and there are suspicions that the dumped material could seriously endanger the environment, groundwater, and human health.
The competent authorities are being asked to determine the type, quantity, and origin of the waste, as well as to test for the possible presence of hazardous substances, including PFAS compounds.
The MP revealed that he had already filed the report on Friday, in the Croatian Parliament. "Yesterday, in the Croatian Parliament, I filed a report with Minister Božinović about a new likely hotspot for poisoning people and nature, now also in Udbina," Miletić stated, adding that he had sent the minister the exact location and photographs of the illegally stored waste, which, as he said, resembles the waste from the silos in Gospić from the outside.
The Ministry of the Interior has been asked to urgently visit the site, document it, and, if necessary, secure it, to prevent any possible removal of evidence or further dumping. The suspicious waste is reportedly located on a plot of land in the cadastral municipality of Udbina, owned by the Republic of Croatia.
Miletić warns that the problem goes far beyond local boundaries and that the situation in Lika poses a serious threat to groundwater, soil, human health, and national security, with potential consequences for the Lika, Gacka, and Northern Littoral regions. "This is no longer an isolated local incident," he said.
In addition to determining the potential danger and elements of a criminal offense, he also calls for the identification of the individuals who transported or left the waste at the site. The MP has requested that the State Inspectorate, the environmental protection inspectorate, the competent state attorney's office, civil protection, and local and regional self-government bodies all be involved in the process.
