While Real Madrid boasts about its new signing, a former club legend is sparing no criticism for the board. Fernando Morientes (50) has publicly questioned the official account of how Rodri's (30) transfer to the Madrid club fell through, calling the explanations 'a bad joke.'
Appearing on the radio show 'El Partidazo de COPE,' Morientes did not mince words. 'Real Madrid didn't give it their all. Now they're shifting the blame onto Rodri, saying he wanted to sign for Barça because of their style of play. That's a bad joke for those of us who know football. They take us for fools. It's clear that Real Madrid didn't want Rodri,' said the former Spanish international.
According to him, the whole situation seems unconvincing, and fans shouldn't fall for the story being fed to the public. Morientes reminded everyone of the club's long tradition of bringing in big stars.
The former striker particularly emphasized that Real Madrid has never 'slept on' the opportunity to sign a player of that caliber. 'Real Madrid doesn't sleep on situations like this. You can sleep on a 14-year-old right-back, but not on players like this,' Morientes stressed.
As the ultimate proof of his point, he recalled a series of historic transfers: 'When Real Madrid went after signings like this, they succeeded. Figo came, Zidane came, Owen came, Ronaldo came... Don't tell me now that Rodri wanted to play somewhere else.'
Morientes' accusations came at the same time as the news that Yan Diomande had successfully completed his medical and had already posed in Real's training kit. The news was shared on social media platform X by renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and the post quickly garnered 400,000 views. While some celebrate the new signing, others wonder if the club could and should have done more regarding Rodri.
