Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the launch of the ambitious Terafab project. This is a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex to be built in Grimes County, Texas, which, according to the companies themselves, could become the largest and most valuable building in the world.
The initial investment in the project amounts to $16.8 billion, as confirmed by Tesla and SpaceX. The complex will span nearly 9.3 million square meters, or approximately 100 million square feet, an area equivalent to about 1,300 football fields. At least 3,000 new jobs are expected to be created.
Unlike conventional chip factories that often separate manufacturing, packaging, and testing phases across multiple locations, Terafab is designed as a vertically integrated production center. This approach, according to Tesla and SpaceX, will enable faster development and shorter time from testing to mass production of new processor designs. The facility is designed to support computing power exceeding one terawatt annually.
SpaceX stated in a press release: "Terafab will be epic in both its mission and its immense size, designed to build new computing at an unprecedented scale and speed."
The produced chips will be used across Musk's various projects. Tesla plans to use them for its Optimus humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence systems. SpaceX will integrate them into satellites capable of carrying computer hardware in orbit, which requires specialized processors.
Musk has previously claimed that existing semiconductor manufacturers will not be able to produce enough chips for the long-term needs of his companies. By bringing production under its own control, Tesla and SpaceX aim to reduce dependence on external suppliers and gain greater flexibility in designing hardware for specific applications.
At a local meeting in Grimes County held on Wednesday, August 5, the plant's chief development engineer, Riley Trettel, stated that SpaceX is starting the project "almost immediately." Jordan Buss, SpaceX's senior director of environment, health, safety, and medicine, emphasized the strategic importance of the factory for the United States.
"This is strategically vital for the United States and, I would say, for Western civilization. America faces a clear and urgent challenge with the offshoring of manufacturing," Buss said at the meeting.
The project also faces local challenges. Nearly 900 residents of Grimes County have signed a petition seeking greater community oversight over large infrastructure projects like Terafab that receive public incentives. SpaceX attorney Bucky Brannen said at the meeting that the company has agreed to pay the county $20 million annually, which amounts to about 78 percent of what they would pay in property taxes.
SpaceX also released several renderings of the future complex on the same day. The visualizations show four massive rectangular buildings connected by a futuristic roadway reminiscent of a Star Wars set. Although the final design may change, the announcement was accompanied by Musk's statement: "Terafab Texas will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth, and it will be stunningly beautiful."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the announcement, presenting it as another investment in the state's growing technology and manufacturing sector. However, the project will face enormous challenges. Advanced chip factories require massive amounts of capital, electricity, water, specialized equipment, and highly trained labor. Construction timelines and production start dates have not yet been detailed.
