Summary
  • A verbal clash erupted in the Kornati waters after a warning about dangerous speedboating.
  • A woman on the speedboat insulted those on the other boat and claimed the island was theirs.
  • Croatian regulations are clear: the maritime domain is public property and cannot be appropriated.

A heated verbal argument broke out off the Kornati islands after a sailor warned a speedboat crew they were moving too close to the shore, reports Morski.hr. The incident, captured on camera, quickly spread across social media.

The footage shows a man on one boat warning those on the speedboat that they were planing near the coast, which could endanger swimmers and other sea traffic. Instead of slowing down, the speedboat crew reacted extremely aggressively.

Threats and Claims of Ownership

Most notably, a woman on the speedboat, noticing the scene was being filmed, began shouting and cursing. During the argument, one person claimed the island was exclusively theirs and that everyone else was on their territory.

This is my island, get out of here, f*** your God and mother, this is my island!

the woman yelled, while the man on the other boat tried to explain that the issue was with planing right along the shore. The conflict escalated to the point of mutual provocations and arguments over who had the right to be in the area.

Maritime Domain Is Not Private

According to the Maritime Domain and Seaports Act, the coastal belt that holds the status of maritime domain is public property and cannot be privately owned. This means that owning land on an island does not give anyone the right to claim the shore or drive others away from the maritime domain.

While private owners can restrict access to their plots inland, they must not arbitrarily appropriate the shore that holds maritime domain status. All citizens have the right to stay and move freely in this area, and any contrary behavior may be punishable.
