The North Atlantic Council convened on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, to discuss recent drone incidents and airspace violations over Poland and Romania. During the meeting, Allies expressed solidarity with the two affected member states and reiterated that Russia bears full responsibility for the dangerous and unacceptable breaches, according to a NATO statement.
According to Euronews, several drones have violated Romanian airspace in recent weeks. Romanian President Nicușor Dan described it as "unacceptable and intolerable" that the Kremlin continues to breach the country's skies. A cruise missile fell on Polish territory on July 29, 2026, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk clarified that the armed drone landed 50 kilometers from the city of Lublin and was "likely" Russian.
"This incident is yet another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine," said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart stated on Wednesday that Allies condemned Russia's "reckless actions" and expressed solidarity with Romania and Poland.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the Alliance demonstrated clear solidarity and readiness for "new actions" to enhance security, particularly along NATO's borders and the Baltic Sea. According to Anadolu Agency, the Alliance pledged to strengthen air and missile defense from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
Romania's Ambassador to NATO, Dan Neculăescu, emphasized the need for Allies to continue contributing to military capabilities that enable Bucharest and NATO to defend more effectively. "I also expressed solidarity with our Polish friends as we continue coordination on the eastern flank," he said.
The meeting's communiqué indicates that Allies stressed that "these and other irresponsible actions by Russia will not deter us from our enduring commitment to Ukraine, whose security contributes to our own." Russia's invasion of Ukraine is entering its fifth year.
Meanwhile, Portugal completed its air policing mission in Estonia, where Portuguese F-16s supported NATO's air defense as part of the enhanced surveillance activities under Eastern Sentry, NATO announced on platform X.
