Surveillance systems detected the object heading toward Kucurgan and Tiraspol, after which a fire broke out in the Stefan Voda district and authorities closed the airspace.
An unidentified object entered the airspace of the Republic of Moldova on Monday, August 17, 2026, and shortly thereafter an explosion was recorded in the country. According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing TV8, the object was detected at 5:37 PM by the surveillance systems of the Moldovan National Army as it was moving toward Kucurgan and Tiraspol.
The Moldovan Ministry of Defense announced that authorities immediately ordered the closure of the airspace in the "Center" sector for approximately 15 minutes. The object then disappeared from surveillance systems in the area of the Talmaza settlement in the Stefan Voda district, where the explosion was heard.
The Police of the Republic of Moldova reported that the explosion caused vegetation to catch fire. The area has been cordoned off, and specialized teams have begun extinguishing the fire and investigating the circumstances of the incident. Bomb disposal experts and police technical services are expected to examine the found debris to determine exactly what kind of device it was.
Ukrainian Telegram channels that monitor air attack assets over Ukrainian territory claim that a Russian drone-missile called "Banderol" flew over Moldovan territory, passing approximately 35 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Russian Telegram channels RVvoenkor and Voenkor Kotenok have published the first footage from the scene in the Stefan Voda district, stating that the drone fell near the village of Talmaza and that the area has been cordoned off by the military.
The police have urged citizens to stay away from the area and not to touch any components or debris found at the scene.
This is not the first such case in Moldova this month. On the evening of August 10, 2026, Moldovan airspace was again violated by a Russian drone, likely a jet-powered "Shahed." A day earlier, on August 9, a new type of device that had not previously fallen on the country's territory exploded in Moldova. Following that incident, Moldova recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has previously stated that some drones enter the country's airspace accidentally, while others do so deliberately.
