Paper driver's licenses, often faded and with photos up to 20 years old, will soon become a thing of the past. Croatia is introducing a new driver's license in card form that will feature as many as 200 different security elements, aiming to enhance security and align with European Union standards.
Blaž Sviličić, Director of the Production Sector at AKD, explained to Dnevnik.hr that the new card offers multi-layered protection. "It has 200 different security elements embedded within the card. Some are visible to citizens, while others can only be read with forensic tools. Importantly, it is interoperable across all EU member states," said Sviličić.
One of the key differences compared to old licenses is how the photo is integrated into the document. "On old licenses, the photo was glued on, whereas on all newer ones, it is integrated into the document itself," explained Sviličić. The new license also contains an electronic data carrier that allows machine reading in multiple ways, including a dedicated machine-readable zone.
The process for obtaining the new driver's license is available at police stations and through the e-Citizens system. The price depends on the processing speed:
An additional option is home delivery of the finished license, which costs €24.02. Citizens with an electronic ID card do not need to submit a new photo, and a medical certificate is only required for professional drivers.
