The Public Health Institute of Lika-Senj County is targeting those who draw water from private sources. They emphasize that water from the municipal supply in Gospić, Otočac, Senj, Perušić, and Karlobag is completely safe for consumption.
After traces of hazardous PFAS compounds were found to have seeped from the waste disposal site in Gospić into groundwater, the Public Health Institute of Lika-Senj County began an urgent information collection effort on Wednesday. The goal is to register all those who obtain water outside the public network, as reported by Radio Gospić.
The call is directed at residents in the areas of three cities-Gospić, Otočac, and Senj-and two municipalities-Perušić and Karlobag. Anyone using their own wells, cisterns, or connected to local water systems that are not part of the public network should contact the Institute without delay. As stated in the announcement, this measure is being taken "in light of new findings regarding the intrusion of PFAS compounds into groundwater beneath the waste disposal site in Gospić, with the aim of preventive health protection for residents."
Due to a high volume of phone calls, the Institute asks citizens to prioritize sending their personal details, including full name, address, and phone number, via email to [email protected]. For those without this option, a phone line is also available at 053 57 48 60.
The Institute particularly emphasized that regular checks under state and source monitoring show no impact of leachate from the landfill on the public water supply. "Water in the public supply system across the entire area of these cities and municipalities is fully tested and safe for drinking!" they stressed.
They added that all standard tests are conducted daily. Should any short-term irregularity occur, such as turbidity, discoloration, or microbiological parameters, local distributors will, as they say, promptly and transparently inform the public via their websites.
This extraordinary action, therefore, concerns exclusively those citizens who are not connected to the public water supply system.
