The Osijek-Baranja Police Department appeals to drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooter riders to obey traffic regulations to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during the peak influx of pilgrims.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the Osijek-Baranja Police Department issued comprehensive safety guidelines ahead of the Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 14 and 15. A large number of pilgrims are expected to head to the shrine in Aljmaš on foot, by bicycle, and by car, leading to increased traffic on roads throughout Osijek-Baranja County.
The police urge all drivers to set off in time, remain patient, and adjust their speed to road conditions. "To ensure the safety of all pilgrims and road users and achieve optimal traffic flow, we hereby appeal to drivers..." reads the opening of the police statement. It is particularly emphasized that drivers should use low beams at night to avoid dazzling pedestrians walking along the roadway.
In the event of a traffic accident, the police remind citizens to provide first aid to the injured and immediately contact emergency services at 194 for medical assistance and 192 for the police. For minor accidents involving only material damage, drivers are required to move their vehicles off the roadway and complete the European Accident Statement. Additionally, drivers are urged to respect traffic signs and follow the instructions of police officers on site.
As many worshippers will be walking on pilgrimage, the police highlight key guidelines. In built-up areas, pedestrians must use sidewalks, while outside built-up areas, they must walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. A column of pedestrians must not exceed 50 meters in length, and they must walk single file along the right edge of the road. At night, and during the day in reduced visibility, all pedestrians must be marked with a light source or reflective material, such as reflective vests or lamps.
Individuals pushing a bicycle, e-scooter, or moped must keep to the right edge of the roadway.
Cyclists may ride on the roadway only on the right side, in single file. In reduced visibility, they are required to wear reflective clothing and have proper lighting, namely a white front light and a red rear light.
Specific instructions also apply to e-scooter riders. They must use bicycle paths or lanes; if these are not available, they may use pedestrian areas, while ensuring the safety of others. The police explicitly state that riding an e-scooter on the roadway is not permitted. While riding, a protective helmet is mandatory, and only the rider may be on the scooter. They are also required to wear a reflective vest or clothing in reduced visibility conditions.
