Central Italy was struck on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by a strong earthquake felt across Tuscany. The ground shaking was recorded at 10:15 AM local time, and according to initial reports, there are currently no reports of injuries or significant material damage.
Seismic data on the earthquake's strength currently vary. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale, while Večernji list cites a magnitude of 4.5.
Similar discrepancies exist regarding the exact location of the epicenter. According to EMSC data, the epicenter was about 18 kilometers northwest of Livorno and nine kilometers southwest of Pisa, at a depth of nine kilometers. On the other hand, the Italian agency ANSA reports that firefighters in Pisa confirmed the epicenter was in the Lucca area. The earthquake was felt across a wider area of northern Tuscany, including the provinces of Lucca, Pisa, and Massa Carrara.
Tuscany's Governor Eugenio Giani took to social media to confirm that checks have been initiated.
"Verifiche in corso con il sistema regionale," Giani wrote, which translates from Italian to "Checks underway with the regional system."
ANSA also reports that dozens of people in the center of Pisa spontaneously left public buildings and took to the streets. Local firefighters have received numerous calls from citizens, but so far there are no reports of damage.
Due to the relatively shallow epicenter of only nine kilometers, the shaking was felt over a wide area. Italy is located in a highly seismically active zone, at the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, and is one of the European countries that most frequently records earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
