Zagreb's Municipal Misdemeanor Court found a 50-year-old man guilty of emotionally abusing his partner and fined him 300 euros. According to Index.hr, the incident occurred in July last year in a Zagreb apartment, following a brief argument over space for her belongings in the bathroom.
During the incident, the man took a box containing her hygiene products and threw it into the hallway, scattering its contents. He then began shouting at his partner and threatened to kill her.
According to the verdict, the defendant shouted: "I gave you everything, you idiot, do you want me to kill you right now? I'm going to get the axe and beat you to death." The woman reacted by screaming and crying, after which the man left the apartment.
The court concluded that his behavior caused fear, anxiety, and a violation of her dignity, and found him guilty of psychological domestic violence.
The man admitted to the described incident in court and expressed remorse for the offense. As mitigating circumstances, the court took into account his confession and the fact that he had no prior misdemeanor convictions, while no aggravating circumstances were established.
The fine amounted to 300 euros, with a payment deadline of three months from the date the verdict becomes final. If he pays two-thirds of the amount within that period, the fine will be considered fully settled.
The court also imposed a three-month ban on harassing, approaching, and stalking his partner. The reasoning states that there is a risk of repeated violence and that the measure was imposed to protect the victim and prevent future incidents.
Since the man is unemployed, the court exempted him from paying the procedural costs, considering that it would threaten his livelihood. The defendant and the police have the right to appeal the verdict to the High Misdemeanor Court within eight days of receiving the verdict.
