Summary
  • HPK successfully secured a regular cargo ferry line from Mali Lošinj to Unije and Susak.

  • HPK President Mihelić called this the first concrete success of his mandate.
  • The ferry "Laslovo" sails on Thursdays, and the line is valid until further notice.

After years of appeals from the field, livestock breeders, olive growers, and other residents of the islands of Susak and Unije have finally seen an end to their transport isolation. The Croatian Chamber of Agriculture (HPK) launched an initiative that resulted in the establishment of a regular ferry line from Mali Lošinj, removing one of the key obstacles to the sustainability of agricultural activities in these parts of Kvarner.

The first voyage took place about ten days ago, at the end of July 2026, when the ferry carried no one except the crew. On that occasion, the Chamber issued an official statement emphasizing that the decision was made precisely because they responded to the calls of the islanders and initiated discussions at the sessions of the Island Council.

Supply and Marketing of Livestock Were Blocked for Decades

The lack of suitable ship transport put local producers in a situation bordering on hopelessness. Procuring necessary animal feed and organizing the transport of animals to slaughterhouses or markets were extremely complicated, directly threatening the extinction of basic agricultural activity on the islands, according to the HPK statement.

The Chamber submitted its request for the introduction of the line to the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, the Agency for Coastal Liner Maritime Transport, and the national shipping company Jadrolinija.

Mihelić: First Tangible Result of My Mandate

HPK President Željko Mihelić emphasized that resolving this issue represents the first concrete success of the Chamber since he took over its leadership.

"I am extremely pleased that the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure reacted quickly and resolved this problem that has plagued island farmers for decades so promptly. And that is the real job of the Croatian Chamber of Agriculture, solving concrete problems. Agriculture on the Kvarner islands has enormous value not only for its economic but also for its demographic and traditional nature," said Mihelić.

He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and the members of the Island Council who, as he stated, were open to dialogue and ready to listen to voices coming directly from the field. This, he added, proves that through such engagement, the problems of islanders are finally being brought to the level where decisions are made. He also announced continued pressure to remove infrastructural and administrative barriers faced by domestic farmers.

Ferry "Laslovo" Sails Every Thursday

The route is intended exclusively for cargo transport and operates regularly on Thursdays. The ferry "Laslovo," owned by Jadrolinija, is assigned for the voyage. The scheduled departure from Mali Lošinj is at 9:00 AM, followed by departure from Unije at 11:10 AM and arrival at Susak at 12:25 PM.

The return journey departs from Susak at 1:25 PM, leaves Unije at 2:55 PM, and arrives in Mali Lošinj at 4:45 PM. The sailing schedule notes that this line is valid until further notice.
