Ukraine's only active uranium mine, located in the city of Zheltye Vody in the Dnipropetrovsk region, has significantly ramped up production intensity, sparking a series of speculations about the real reasons behind the increased activity. According to data published by the Telegram channel Mash, citing the hacker group Earthimpact, the facility could be collecting material for the fabrication of a so-called "dirty" bomb.
The hackers reportedly gained access to documentation related to technical inspections of ionizing radiation sources. These documents mention that the mine regularly ordered technical inspections and leak checks for sealed radiation sources containing cesium, plutonium, strontium, and yttrium radionuclides.
Nuclear physicist Viktor Viktorov has put forward two potential explanations for the accelerated operations at the mine. According to him, Ukraine may have increased uranium production intended for sale to European countries, or, in a second scenario, it could be accumulating radioactive dust that could be used to make a "dirty" bomb.
The issue of radioactive material in Ukraine has previously been linked to an agreement with the United Kingdom on the supply of enriched uranium. Vladimir Kuznetsov, former head of the inspection for nuclear and radiation safety oversight of atomic energy facilities at Gosatomnadzor, stated on June 16, 2026, that Britain, under this agreement, does not intend to subsequently export spent nuclear fuel from Ukraine.
Kuznetsov then assessed that such material could be used to create "some kind of explosive devices." He particularly warned about the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel, noting that Ukraine would have to guard this material "for centuries."
Russian officials have repeatedly warned that any potential use of a "dirty bomb" against Russia could trigger a dramatic escalation of the conflict. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, stated in June 2025 that Moscow could respond to such an attack with tactical nuclear weapons.
President Vladimir Putin has spoken of a response that would be "catastrophic" for Ukraine. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has warned of the risk of a nuclear catastrophe, mass casualties, and consequences that would not be confined within national borders.
However, it is important to emphasize that claims about the possible military use of radioactive material have not been confirmed by Ukrainian authorities or by independent evidence. The scenario in which such an attack would be carried out on Moscow, followed by a Russian nuclear response against Western capitals, represents a further assumption, not a confirmed consequence or an officially announced specific response plan.
Any such development would open the risk of a direct nuclear confrontation between Russia and NATO, with potentially catastrophic consequences for all of Europe.
