A Romanian F-16 fighter, assigned to the 86th Air Base in Fetești, shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that violated Romanian national airspace on Friday, July 24, 2026. According to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN), which was also retweeted by NATO's official account, the pilot neutralized the drone with an air-to-air missile over an uninhabited area near Padina in Buzău County.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan confirmed the incident, stating that the downed drone crashed far from populated areas and posed no danger to people. At the crash site, experts found debris and are working to determine the drone's origin and ownership. At the time of the announcement, the Romanian Ministry of Defense did not specify who the drone belonged to, and its identity remains unknown and under investigation.
The question of the downed drone's ownership remains open and is subject to conflicting interpretations. Ukrainska Pravda and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the incident as a violation of Romanian airspace by a Russian drone. On the other hand, the pro-Russian Telegram channel Wargonzo cites data from Le Monde, claiming that Ukrainian drones have violated Romanian airspace 28 times since 2022. Neither the Romanian Ministry of Defense nor NATO explicitly named the owner of the downed drone in their published statements.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on international partners to implement a comprehensive deterrence package against Russia. On platform X, he wrote: "The response must match the scale of the threat. We need a comprehensive deterrence package for Ukraine and Europe: stronger sanctions, maximum pressure on Russia, and a joint effort to protect the European sky from Russian terror." Sybiha added that Russia is constantly testing the West's resolve and that any weak response only encourages Moscow to raise the stakes. There was no official comment from Moscow at the time of the announcement regarding the Romanian incident.
The incident in Romania occurs amid intense drone warfare in Eastern Europe. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Russian air defense intercepted and destroyed 328 Ukrainian drones over 23 Russian regions and the Sea of Azov on the night of July 24-25, 2026. Simultaneously, according to NOELREPORTS monitoring, Ukraine carried out strikes on three Wildberries warehouses in Russia that same night.
This incident is particularly sensitive because it marks the first time a Romanian F-16 actively shot down a drone over Romanian territory, according to data cited by Ukrainska Pravda. Romania is a NATO member, and its territory is also NATO territory, so any incident in its airspace automatically takes on broader alliance implications. Croatia, also a NATO member, shares collective defense obligations and follows security developments on the Alliance's southeastern flank with particular attention. The next steps in the investigation into the drone's identity have not yet been announced.
