Sevastopol, a city on the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, faced two serious security breaches on Monday, August 4, 2026. In the first incident, a Russian soldier killed four people, three of whom were civilians, while in a separate operation, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested two men accused of plotting terrorist attacks on the orders of Ukraine's military intelligence (GUR).
Meanwhile, the Telegram channel AMK Mapping reported a possible launch of a supersonic cruise missile, the Oniks, from the Crimean area, further underscoring the tense atmosphere in this strategic part of the Black Sea.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-appointed governor of the Sevastopol region, was the first to share details of the tragedy via his Telegram channel. The incident, as he described, unfolded in two stages. "According to initial information, the soldier opened fire on his comrades, killing one person, and then attacked civilians, killing three of them," Razvozhayev wrote. One more person was wounded in the attack on his fellow soldiers.
The governor confirmed that the attacker has been detained and that the motive is not yet known. "All circumstances and causes of the incident are being established," Razvozhayev said, urging citizens to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information. He also released the identities of the civilian victims: men aged 71 and 59, and a woman aged 64.
In a separate operation, FSB officers arrested two Russian citizens in Sevastopol. According to the Russian insider channel Rybar, they were acting on instructions from Ukraine's military intelligence and preparing a series of terrorist acts. The suspects were gathering information about Russian military facilities and air defense systems, and their plans included attacks on critical infrastructure and on one of the leaders of the new Russian regions. During searches, three FPV drones with warheads, an improvised explosive device, and other equipment for carrying out attacks were found in their possession.
Rybar, which identifies itself as a Russian insider channel, views this operation as the usual modus operandi of Ukrainian special services, which recruit perpetrators among Russian citizens via social media for sabotage and assassinations.
Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, has been enduring Ukrainian strikes aimed at disrupting Russian logistics in southern Ukraine for months. Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, the peninsula has served as a base for Russian military operations. The latest events highlight growing instability in the region, where internal issues such as shootings and terrorist threats intertwine with active military operations, including indications of a possible missile launch.
