The County SDP has unveiled the Dalmatian S-Bahn project, a modern commuter railway that would connect Split with its hinterland, with the first step being a feasibility study.
The SDP of Split-Dalmatia County held a presidency meeting in Sinj on Saturday, August 9, 2026, where an ambitious plan to address the transport isolation of the Dalmatian hinterland was presented. The key proposal concerns the initiative for the Dalmatian S-Bahn, a modern commuter rail system that would initially connect Split, Solin, Dugopolje, Dicmo, and Sinj.
On this occasion, the party issued sharp criticism of the county's priorities, drawing a parallel with the recent allocation of 12 million euros for the stadium in Vučevica. "If Split-Dalmatia County can allocate 12 million euros for a stadium in Vučevica, then it must have the ambition and resources to launch a feasibility study for a project that tens of thousands of residents of the Dalmatian hinterland and the wider Split area would use daily," the SDP stated.
According to their vision, the project could later expand towards Trilj and the Imotski region. At the next session of the County Assembly, the SDP will immediately propose a decision requesting the county to begin work on a feasibility study for the project.
In the SDP's view, daily traffic congestion on the approach to Split from the direction of Sinj, as well as from other parts of the county, indicates that building new roads is no longer sufficient. They advocate for a stronger rail system that would provide citizens with faster, more reliable, and more environmentally friendly public transport.
"The Dalmatian hinterland does not seek privileges, but equal development rights. Transport is not just about roads-it is a prerequisite for economic development, access to education, healthcare, and a better quality of life. It is time for a 21st-century transport vision," concludes the SDP of Split-Dalmatia County.
In addition to developing rail infrastructure, the SDP also calls for the urgent acceleration of the construction of the Zagvozd-Imotski expressway, a clear timeline for the Sinj bypass, and the creation of a unified transport strategy that integrates road, bus, and rail transport.
The demands also include establishing an integrated fare model for public transport, as well as an extraordinary inspection of the technical condition of buses operating in the Dalmatian hinterland, alongside continued funding for safer state roads and bypasses. The SDP emphasizes that the protection of citizens must take precedence over any commercial interest.
