Summary
  • A round table about the play 'King Lear' by Teatar Ulysses was held on Brijuni.
  • After 26 years and more than a hundred performances, Rade Šerbedžija plays the title role for the last time.
  • The final performance of the play is scheduled for August 13, 2026, on Mali Brijuni.
  • Participants of the round table reminisced about the beginnings and the energy that kept the play alive for a quarter of a century.

A Farewell That May Not Be Final

Rade Šerbedžija, who has been playing Lear for a quarter of a century, spoke emotionally about his decision to step down. "I guess Shakespeare kept me going until I was 80. I feel like I'm only now playing him well," the actor said. He admitted that what he will miss most is what he calls "divine inspiration", those rare moments on stage when an actor achieves something beyond conscious control.

While Lenka Udovički admitted that she finds it hard even to imagine the final performance, Šerbedžija left an ambiguous remark that doesn't sound like a definitive goodbye: "So the stars have said."

After 26 Brijuni summers, on August 13, Rade Šerbedžija will step out of Fort Minor as King Lear for the last time. Although the play may be ending, the story that began in 2001 on Mali Brijuni with a group of friends, as they note from Ulysses, is unlikely to end with it.
