Sunday was anything but peaceful for the members of the HGSS station in Šibenik. After spending the day searching the Ervenik area, a new urgent report came in that took them to Dinara, where they rescued two disoriented foreign nationals in the middle of the night.
First Ervenik: Search for a Missing Local
The first operation began around 2 p.m. when a worried local resident reported the disappearance of his neighbor from Ervenik via the County Center 112. As reported by Šibenski Kanal, the neighbor had not been seen for several days. Four rescuers equipped with a drone immediately headed to the scene and began searching the area. After some time, the police obtained new operational information, which brought the HGSS engagement in Ervenik to an end, and the rescuers were able to return home. However, for part of the team, the rest was short-lived.
Night Call from Dinara
Just before 9:30 p.m., a new report came in from the County Center 112. Two foreign nationals had gotten lost somewhere in the area of Martinova košara on Dinara and had called for help in a panic. The connection was soon lost, and no additional information was available until 10 p.m., when the rescuers re-established contact with the women. They were not injured but were cold and completely disoriented. The crucial moment came when they managed to send their location, after which they were clearly instructed to stay where they were.
Two rescuers immediately launched into action. Equipped with food and drink to revive the victims, they began their ascent of Dinara. They found the lost women at 1:30 a.m. After providing first aid, warm clothing, and refreshments, they began the return journey to Glavaš, the starting point of the ascent. The entire operation concluded around 4 a.m. when everyone arrived safely at their destination.
Appeal from HGSS: "Accidents Don't Only Happen to Others"
After another demanding night, HGSS issued an important warning to all hikers and day-trippers. They emphasize that every trip into nature, even one that seems simple, requires proper preparation. A hiking backpack should always include warmer clothing, sufficient water, and a fully charged phone. "Remember the advice, accidents don't only happen to others," the Šibenik HGSS members urged. Simple preparation can be crucial, especially when darkness falls in the mountains and you lose your bearings, turning a planned outing into a dramatic situation.
