Russia placed Conor Kennedy, son of US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on an international wanted list on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, for his participation in the war in Ukraine during 2022. A Moscow court gave the green light for Kennedy's detention in absentia, with Russian authorities accusing him of acting as a mercenary in military actions against Russian forces.
Under Russian law, if he is arrested and extradited to Russia, he faces a prison sentence of seven to ten years.
After returning to the United States, Kennedy publicly spoke about his experience on the front lines. In a post from October 2022, he emphasized that he was deeply moved by what he saw in Ukraine and that he made the decision to go. Despite having no prior military experience, he said he was physically and mentally prepared to accept the possibility of dying.
"I was ready to die there," Kennedy wrote, describing his experience in Ukraine.
He also characterized the conflict in Ukraine as a struggle that, in his view, would determine the path of democracy in this era. After joining the Legion, Kennedy was deployed to the northeastern front, in the Kharkiv region, where he spent part of his time. He remained in Ukraine for nearly two and a half months before returning to the United States.
Kennedy's placement on the wanted list comes at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and the United States. Russian authorities accuse him of participating in military operations against Russian forces as a mercenary, which under Russian legislation carries serious legal consequences.
For now, it is unknown whether the United States will respond to Moscow's move or whether there is any possibility of extraditing Kennedy to Russia. The next step in this case has not been announced.
