Spanish Super Cup 2027 Moves to Istanbul

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that the 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be played in Istanbul. Turkey beat out seven other bidders to host the tournament, which will feature FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Atlético de Madrid.

Why Saudi Arabia Was Skipped

The Super Cup has been regularly held in Saudi Arabia since 2020, with RFEF having a contract with the country until 2027. However, the Asian Cup is scheduled to take place in the same country from January 7 to February 5, 2027, creating a scheduling conflict and logistical challenges.

As a result, RFEF decided to move the tournament to Turkey, with all matches to be played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. The federation also confirmed that the 2028 Super Cup will return to Saudi Arabia.

According to sources, this season's Super Cup will be held from February 2 to 7 in Turkey, rather than in Saudi Arabia as originally planned. All matches are expected to be played in Istanbul.

Tournament Format and Last Year's Winner

The Spanish Super Cup brings together four clubs that finished in the top two positions in La Liga the previous season and reached the final of the Copa del Rey. The tournament consists of three matches: two semifinals and a final.

Last year's edition in 2026 was won by Barcelona, who became Spanish super champions. This year, the battle for the first trophy of the season is between Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Atlético Madrid.

In a statement released on RFEF's website and social media channels, it was noted that the decision was made after "a period of work and negotiations." The federation emphasizes that this ensures "the continuation of the benefits that Spanish football derives from playing this tournament."
