The City of Split is donating €80,000 to the City of Omiš to address the aftermath of the devastating fire that struck the area on August 13, 2026. The decision was made by Split's Mayor, Tomislav Šuta, with funds drawn from the 2026 budget reserve.
The money is intended for urgent post-fire recovery, reconstruction of destroyed and damaged infrastructure, and provision of basic necessities for affected and evacuated residents. "In difficult times, we must stand by one another. Omiš is our neighboring city, and we believe it is our duty to help as much as we can. These funds are designated for post-fire recovery, infrastructure reconstruction, and ensuring basic supplies for those affected and evacuated," Šuta stated.
Logistical Support from Day One
Split's assistance has not been limited to financial aid. From the very outbreak of the fire, all available machinery and personnel from Split's utility companies have been placed at Omiš's disposal. The companies Čistoća and Parkovi i nasadi have provided grapple trucks and specialized teams already working on rehabilitating the burned area.
During the fire itself, the hall at Gripama in Split was prepared to accommodate over 300 evacuated people. Once conditions on the ground proved safe, the company Promet provided bus transportation, allowing evacuated residents to return home without issue.
Solidarity Across Croatia
The Split-Dalmatia County has decided to allocate €200,000 to assist Omiš. As stated in the budget specification, €92,900 will be covered from the budget reserve managed by the County Prefect's Office, with an additional €107,100 coming from funds of the Administrative Department for Tourism, Maritime Affairs, and Transport, which were designated for urgent works on maritime property.
County Prefect Blaženko Boban highlighted the great unity and solidarity shown across Croatia in recent days. "In recent days, I've received calls from colleagues all over Croatia, numerous municipal leaders, mayors, and county prefects, all eager to offer help and financial support for post-fire recovery. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their solidarity. In moments like these, we once again demonstrate what we have proven many times: the Croatian people are always united when threatened and when help is most needed. This is yet another powerful testament to that unity. Therefore, the Split-Dalmatia County will urgently provide €200,000 in aid to the City of Omiš for post-fire recovery," Boban said.
The City of Karlovac has announced a donation of €20,000 for post-fire recovery, with the message: "Here in Karlovac, we know all too well what it's like to deal with the aftermath of major disasters. We also know how much it means when a helping hand arrives quickly, concretely, and from the heart. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the firefighters, emergency services, volunteers, and all citizens who worked around the clock on the ground, protecting lives and saving everything that could be saved. We send strength and full support to Omiš and all affected families from Karlovac," stated the City of Karlovac, as reported by Radio Mrežnica.
The City of Zagreb will provide €130,000 in aid to Omiš. The decision was confirmed on Monday by Zagreb's Mayor, Tomislav Tomašević, and supported by the President of the City Assembly, Matej Mišić. According to Telegram.hr, this is the maximum amount the mayor can approve without requiring a budget rebalance or a City Assembly session.
