A 17-year-old from Varaždin County has been convicted of physically assaulting his own mother, whom he punched in the face last autumn while under the influence of alcohol. The Municipal Court in Varaždin found him guilty of the criminal offense of bodily injury, but decided to give him one last chance to change his behavior before imposing a prison sentence.
Assault in the Bedroom of the Family Home
According to the verdict, the incident occurred on October 17, 2025, shortly before midnight, in the bedroom of the family home in Varaždin County. The minor, in an intoxicated state, punched his mother in the face, causing visible injuries-swelling and a bruise under her left eye. Since the victim was a close person, the act was classified as a more serious criminal offense.
During the court proceedings, the 17-year-old fully confessed to the crime and expressed sincere remorse. He also stated that he had stopped consuming alcohol.
Strained Family Relations and Discontinued Education
In the explanation of the verdict, the court particularly highlighted the young man's difficult family circumstances. He comes from a highly strained family environment, marked by years of conflict between his parents. After discontinuing his education, he found employment on the island of Krk, but in the earlier period he frequently consumed alcohol, which the court considered an aggravating circumstance.
Last Chance Before Jail
Instead of immediately imposing a juvenile prison sentence, the court applied the measure of deferring the sentence. This means that the minor will remain free, but on the condition that he does not commit any new criminal offense in the next two years. Otherwise, the prison sentence will be imposed later.
Expert opinions considered during the proceedings assessed that the threat of imprisonment could have a strong preventive effect and deter him from repeating violent behavior. In addition to the deferred sentence, the minor is also obliged to pay the costs of the criminal proceedings in the amount of 300 euros.
With this decision, the court gave him the opportunity to change his behavior, but with a clear message that any new incident would automatically mean going to juvenile prison.
