On the railway line between the stations of Sveti Ivan Žabno and Gradec, near Križevci, a collision between a freight train and a passenger train occurred this morning. According to initial information, several people were injured, and an emergency medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
The accident occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at exactly 10:05 AM. The freight train, owned by HŽ Cargo, and the passenger train operated by HŽ Passenger Transport collided. The collision happened on the section connecting Sveti Ivan Žabno and Gradec, in the village of Škrinjari.
All emergency services, including the police and multiple ambulance teams, immediately arrived at the scene. Due to the severity of the accident, a helicopter emergency medical service was also deployed, which, according to Križevci.info, transported one person. Index reports that the locomotive driver sustained serious injuries.
As of now, there is no confirmation of the exact number of passengers on the passenger train at the time of the collision. A witness to the accident told the portal Prigorski: "I came out okay, unfortunately some are worse off. There were about fifty of us on the train. I'm speechless."
On the other hand, an official statement from HŽ, as reported by Križevci.info, states that there were "about 20 passengers" on the train. The portal ePodravina also mentions around twenty passengers. These conflicting reports will only be clarified once the authorities complete their investigation and establish all the circumstances of the accident.
Shortly after the accident, HŽ issued a statement confirming that there were no fatalities. "According to currently available information, there are injured persons, but no fatalities," the statement read. It was also confirmed that the railway line on that section is closed to all traffic while the investigation and cleanup are underway.
The cause of the collision is not yet known, and more details are expected once investigators finish their work at the scene.
