In an accident that occurred Saturday evening near the Statue of Liberty in New York, a woman and a five-month-old baby died after a boat capsized. New York police reported that the vessel's operator was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, and an investigation into the exact circumstances of the tragedy is ongoing.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, August 8, 2026, near New York Harbor. Following a report of a capsized boat, a large search and rescue operation was immediately launched, pulling a total of 12 people from the water. Unfortunately, despite the swift response, the woman and the five-month-old baby did not survive.
During the operation, two vessels from the U.S. Coast Guard, four fireboats, two police boats, and one police helicopter were deployed. U.S. Coast Guard Captain Doreen McCarthy expressed gratitude to all participants in the operation.
"We are extremely grateful for the heroic, swift actions of our partner agencies and the crew of the civilian vessel that helped rescue survivors from the water," said Captain McCarthy.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the U.S. Coast Guard is conducting a separate review to determine whether the boat was illegally chartered for passenger transport. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased and survivors. Official information about the vessel's technical condition has also not been released, and investigators are gathering evidence to determine what exactly caused the capsizing.
The captain of the boat, who was taken into custody, has been charged with reckless endangerment, while other potential charges have not yet been officially announced. Authorities are expected to release more details about the cause of the accident and the responsibility of the person operating the vessel after the investigation is complete.
