The US president said Washington would bomb Oman if it interfered in the deal to control the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.
US President Donald Trump threatened on Monday, August 17, 2026, to bomb Oman if the country interfered in the deal to control the Strait of Hormuz. Trump made the remarks in an interview with Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, as reported by Hindustan Times.
"If Oman gets in the way, we'll blow them to smithereens," Trump said, referring to ongoing negotiations between Oman and Iran over control of the strait, while Washington simultaneously conducts its own talks.
Trump also told Iran that it should "raise the white flag of surrender," according to Yingst's post on platform X about the interview with the president. He also addressed the timeline for resolving the conflict.
"I don't have a timeline. I'm in no rush... the midterms have nothing to do with my thinking," Trump added.
The war with Iran has been going on for nearly six months with no end in sight, and negotiations between the US and Iran for a lasting peace have stalled. Sporadic clashes continue to flare up, disrupting the flow of oil and other key goods through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, Trump was filmed waving as he boarded Air Force One at Morristown Airport in New Jersey, a day before he issued the threat to Oman.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important routes for oil transport, and the US blockade of Iranian ships further escalates tensions in the region. An escalation could impact global energy prices, indirectly affecting European economies as well.
