The Međimurje Police Department conducted an intensified traffic control operation called "Alcohol and Seat Belt" on the night from Saturday to Sunday, August 15/16, 2026. In just six hours, from 7 PM to 1 AM, police officers from the Čakovec Traffic Police Station identified a total of 38 violations of the Road Traffic Safety Act.
Special attention was focused on driving under the influence of alcohol and the use of seat belts, and the results of the operation showed that some drivers continue to disregard basic traffic rules.
Five Drivers Under the Influence of Alcohol
During the control, five violations of driving under the influence of alcohol were recorded. In one case, the driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.50 to 1.00 g/kg, while three drivers showed levels between 1.00 and 1.50 g/kg. One violation involved a cyclist with a blood alcohol concentration above 1.00 up to 1.50 g/kg.
The highest measured alcohol level, 1.41 g/kg, was recorded on Saturday, August 15, at 8:33 PM in the area of Strahoninec. The police stopped a 24-year-old man who was driving a car with license plates from Čakovec.
For the violation he committed, the 24-year-old had to pay a fine of 660 euros. In addition to the fine, he was also banned from driving motor vehicles of category B for two months, along with four penalty points on his driving record.
Speed, Mobile Phone, and Seat Belt
In addition to alcohol, police officers also recorded 12 violations of speeding. Furthermore, one case of using a mobile phone while driving without permission was detected, and one case where the vehicle was not technically roadworthy. It was also noted that someone was driving a vehicle without having yet obtained the right to drive.
Regarding safety measures in the vehicle, it was determined six times that drivers were not using their seat belts, and in two cases, they were not wearing protective helmets. Additionally, police officers recorded 10 other violations of the Road Traffic Safety Act and three violations of the Personal Identification Card Act.
The police emphasized that they will continue to monitor the behavior of traffic participants, especially those violations that could endanger the safety of everyone on the road.
