Vacationing with relatives is often imagined as an opportunity for bonding and creating shared memories. But when mutual respect is lacking and gratitude is replaced by a sense of entitlement, a holiday can turn into a real ordeal. That's exactly what happened to Marina, a Croatian pensioner, who shared her story with Metropolitan, as reported by Zagreb.info.
She had promised her cousin, whom she hadn't seen for months because she lives in Podravina, that she would take her to her apartment on Mali Lošinj during the summer. "It was out of the goodness of my heart; I didn't ask her to bring food or anything else. I just wanted us to have a nice time, to relax and hang out," Marina explained her initial intention.
Problems Started Right After Arrival
But from the very first day, things went downhill. "The questions started right away: What are we going to cook? When is lunch? Will we eat before or after the beach? By the end of the first day, I was fed up," the pensioner recalled. Instead of a relaxing week by the sea, she listened to the same questions and comments every day.
"I couldn't even make coffee in peace; she was already standing behind me: What's for lunch? Why are you cooking that again? Wouldn't we rather have some vegetables? As if she were the host and I were the guest in my own apartment," Marina complained.
She Pinched Pennies While Getting Everything for Free
Even though Marina took care of food and accommodation, her cousin constantly kept an eye on expenses. "Whenever we went for coffee, she'd pay for every other round. God forbid she spends a euro more than me. She kept complaining about how expensive everything was. Well, who forced her to come if she's watching every cent? After all, she got food and lodging for free," she pointed out.
The Washing Machine Was the Last Straw
The complaints reached their peak when the cousin started grumbling about the lack of a washing machine in the apartment. "She started complaining about how it's possible that I don't have a washing machine at the seaside and asked how she was supposed to wash her clothes. I don't need one because I bring enough clothes with me, and if I run out, I wash them by hand. She didn't come to a five-star hotel! And every other day, she found something that bothered her. Instead of enjoying herself, she grumbled," Marina recounted.
In the end, she concluded that she'd had enough. "I wanted to do her a favor, give her a nice vacation and some shared moments. In return, I got a bad mood and felt like I was at work, not on vacation. All she had to do was enjoy herself and be a little grateful. Instead, she thoroughly ruined my holiday," the disappointed pensioner said.
