After grueling days at the Omiš fire, firefighter Eliza from the Rovišće Volunteer Fire Department fell asleep from exhaustion, and a photo of that moment became a symbol of the efforts of Croatian firefighters.
Sometimes a single image can convey more than a thousand words, and such was the case after grueling days at the Omiš fire. Among the many firefighters who helped battle the blaze were members of the Garešnica Public Fire Brigade, and it was their colleague Eliza from the Rovišće Volunteer Fire Department who became a symbol of the exhaustion that follows dedicated work in the field.
Eliza arrived in Omiš as part of the team, without special privileges or excuses, ready to tackle any task that came her way. During the day, she helped lay hoses and extinguish flames, working alongside the rest of the crew.
When they were called back out in the middle of the night, there was no question of whether she was up to it. She grabbed her backpack and headed into the hills with the team to put out the remaining hotspots. Only after everything was done did her body show signs of fatigue. Exhaustion simply overcame her.
From the Garešnica Public Fire Brigade, they wrote alongside the photo: "We couldn't leave without capturing this moment." They added: "Eliza, hats off! We're glad you were part of our team on this deployment."
